Bone Density Testing
Bone Mineral Density Test is a non-invasive procedure that is similar to a x-ray, but with very small doses of radiation. Bone Density Test is the single most useful procedure in the diagnosis of osteoporosis and the evaluation of fracture risk. Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by low bone density. When there is less bone density, the bones become brittle, weak and more likely to fracture. Known as "the silent condition" many times you are not aware you have this condition until the first fracture occurs.
Woman's Clinic offers a Bone Density Test to aid in the diagnosis of Osteoporosis. The results of this test will be read by your physician and along with your medical history and the list of risk factors, the physician will determine if you are at risk for Osteoporosis.
The bone density test utilizes very small doses of radiation, (less than a dental x-ray). You will lay fully clothed on a padded table with a pillow. The technician will position your body appropriately for the test. The test consists of two bone scans: one scan on the spine and one on the femur (hip). You are required to remain completely still throughout the scans. The spine scan takes approximately 2 to 3 minutes and the femur will take 4 to 5 minutes to complete.
All of our technologists have been certified in Excell Bone Densitometry Applications and Software.
Tips to Remember when Preparing for a Bone Density Test
Wear comfortable clothing, preferably slacks with an elastic waist. Zippers or other ornamentation made of metal or plastic will show up on the test and will alter results.
Please be sure to inform the technician if you have a surgical device or implant such as a hip replacement, colostomy, etc.
While the scan is being performed you must remain still, if there is movement during the test, the results may be inaccurate and the technician may request that the scan be repeated.
